The Clouds have each paired with one of the younger students from the Watermelon class for Book Buddies. Each of the students got to read to one of the younger students. The Clouds were such great role models and worked really hard to keep the younger students engaged and focused, which wasn't always an easy task! The younger students loved being read to by older students. It was great to watch all of the students enjoying reading!

Today the Clouds took a field trip to the Museum of Natural History! They have been learning about Native Americans, specifically the Iroquois tribe, so they went to go look at different Native American artifacts in the Eastern Woodlands exhibit. They saw a long house, bow and arrow, spear, wampum, and a papoose (if you're not sure what wampum and papooses are ask your cloud!) After completing their Native American scavenger hunt, the Clouds chose to go see the Ocean Life exhibit, where they got to see some sea creatures and a giant blue whale. Then it was time for a picnic lunch in Central Park and some free time in the playground!! The Clouds had an awesome day at the museum! Thanks to the Shah family, the Clouds were able to take a trip to the CNN Headquarters in Columbus Circle! The students were able to tour two different studios and hear about the shows that are filmed there. Then, they watched the ending of "CNN Newsroom " being filmed live. Some students were able to use a headset to listen in on the conversation between the news anchors and guests on the show. After that, the students met the anchors John Berman and Poppy Harlow and ask them questions about their job, lives, and what cool celebrities they've met! Then we headed over to the editing rooms. The Clouds were able to draw some animation and watch editors work. The field trip ended with a catered lunch provided by CNN. It was a trip that they will never forget! The Clouds have been working super hard to follow the Gillen Brewer School goals of being responsible, safe, and ready! Since they have been doing such a great job at following the school goals they were rewarded with some free time at the park on Friday!! The Clouds love going to the park to run around, play tag, and go on the monkey bars! The Clouds finally got to show off all their research, creative skills, and hard work today at our Landmark Presentation. The students displayed their diorama and PowerPoints to guests visiting from around the school. The Clouds proudly talked about where their landmark is, why it's important, and fun things you can do there. In conjunction with our Social Studies unit on NY landforms and landmarks, the Clouds took a trip to experience some NYC landmarks first hand. The class took a sightseeing field trip on a Circle Line Cruise. We started by boarding the boat at the pier and met David, our tour guide. David taught us all about the history of Manhattan and pointed out several landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Intrepid, World Trade Center, and the Empire State Building. Even though it was a cloudy day, that didn't stop our Clouds from having a blast! Recently in social studies, the Clouds have been researching different New York City landmarks. Each student is working on dioramas that depict a NYC landmark and the surrounding landforms. The Clouds are working hard to turn everyday items (e.g., toilet paper rolls, paper, Styrofoam) into known landforms and landmarks! Here is a sneak peak of their work so far! During Art Farm this week, Gabby brought insects. The Clouds learned that all insects have six legs and three body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen). The first insect the Clouds learned about was Woody the two-year-old walking stick. We learned that if walking sticks lose their legs, they would easily grow back. The next insects they learned about were crickets. Crickets are nocturnal! Next, the students met Grape and Licorice the blue death-feigning beetles. They have smooth bodies, are herbivores, and live in the sand. Lastly, the students learned about glow spot insects. These insects are from the South American rain forests and the males have orange spots. Today Gillen Brewer had two special guests, Todd and Piggy. Todd is the author to a comic book about his "Super Hero" dog named Piggy. When Piggy was young he got into an accident and lost one of his legs. Now Piggy has the ability to know when someone is in distress. The Clouds had a great time petting Piggy and reading Todd's comic book. In Social Studies the Clouds have been studying the geography of New York City and different landmarks in the five boroughs. Each student has been assigned a different NYC landmark, which they are researching using their laptops, creating a PowerPoint presentation, and a model of their landmark to share with the class. Since this week was screen free week, the Clouds took a break from their computers to walk to a local landmark, Gracie Mansion. The Clouds were all interested in learning about the history of Gracie Mansion and seeing the plaque that says it is an official landmark. |
